The 2025 NFL Hall of Fame Class contained an extremely small number of inductees. Cornerback Eric Allen, defensive end Jared Allen (no relation), tight end Antonio Gates, and wide receiver Sterling Sharpe were the only inductees to the NFL Hall of Fame on August 2, 2025. Eric Allen played 14 seasons in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, and the then Oakland Raiders. Jared Allen played 12 seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and Carolina Panthers.

Eric Allen recorded 54 interceptions during his career. But his best season was in 1993 as a member of the Eagles. Eric Allen intercepted six passes for a league leading 201 yards and four touchdowns (or “pick sixes” as interceptions returned for touchdowns are affectionately called today). Eric Allen’s four pick sixes were tied for the NFL record for most in a season. It has since been eclipsed by current Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback Daron Bland, who returned five interceptions for touchdowns in 2023.

Not to be outdone, Jared Allen established himself as a great defensive force in his own right. A 2004 fourth round selection by the Kansas City Chiefs after attending Idaho State, it can be reasoned that Jared Allen was unheralded coming out of college. Nevertheless, he recorded 136 sacks, forced 32 fumbles, recovered 19 fumbles, six interceptions, as well as scoring two defensive touchdowns.

On the offensive side of the Class of 2025, Antonio Gates played 16 seasons for the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, while Sterling Sharpe played seven seasons for the Green Bay Packers before his career was cut short by a neck injury. Gates and Sharpe are mainly responsible for the eventual ascension of two future iconic NFL quarterbacks. Before compiling a stellar career playing for the New Orleans Saints, quarterback Drew Brees started his NFL career as a second round pick by the then San Diego Chargers in 2001. Gates enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2005, recording 89 receptions for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns. Gates and Brees were teammates in San Diego from 2003 to 2005, with Brees serving as the team’s starting quarterback during that time. Brees will be eligible for induction to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2026. While Brees’ career really took off with the New Orleans Saints, it was his on field connection with Gates that served as the catalyst for each of their great careers.

Sharpe led the NFL in receptions three times (1989, 1992, and 1993). He was also the standard of durability, as he played in all 112 of a possible 112 games from 1988 to 1994. Sharpe’s on field greatness coincided with the rise of a young quarterback who joined the Green Bay Packers in 1992. That was the year that Brett Favre became the starting quarterback for the Packers, establishing his legacy as a Hall of Fame quarterback. And it’s all thanks in great part to the contributions of Sterling Sharpe.

It’s easy to see the greatness of the 2025 NFL Hall of Fame inductees. What’s equally fascinating is the accomplishments of Gates and Sharpe. Gates became the first Hall of Fame inductee to have never played college football. Gates played college basketball at Kent State. located in Ohio. He was an undrafted free agent by the Chargers in 2003. The route Gates took to the NFL towards his Hall of Fame induction serves as a testament to his versatility, talent, hard work, and perseverance. In addition, Sterling Sharpe joins his brother Shannon as the first brothers in NFL history to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Shannon Sharpe was elected in 2011 after playing 14 NFL seasons as a tight end for the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens. Seeing the Sharpe brothers hug each other after Sterling’s induction was an extremely emotional moment, as this day was reserved for the brothers to celebrate Sterling’s induction after 25 years of eligibility.

There may be past Hall of Fame induction classes that are more memorable for different reasons. The inductions of Antonio Gates and Sterling Sharpe provide NFL firsts that can only be duplicated but never eclipsed. That alone makes the NFL 2025 Hall of Fame induction class even more special.
